My great uncle Daniel Joseph Ousley joined the 2/22nd Battalion, known as the Lark Force, in WWII and in 1942 his mother Bridget received a letter advising he was missing in action, presumed dead.
His family tried for many years to find out what happened to him, writing many letters to the government but getting no answers. It was not until 1984 that freedom of information restrictions were lifted on the story of one of the great tragedies of the war. 160 members of the Lark Force, including members of the New Guinea Volunteer Rifles (NGVR) who had surrendered to the Japanese at Tol Plantation were tied together in groups of around 10 or 12, and either bayoneted or shot. They were left to die where they lay. This became known as the Tol Massacre. One of the victims was Great uncle Daniel.
I have just returned from PNG after a rugged journey with seven family members (AKA Bernie’s Family) to Rabaul and Tol to commemorate our ancestors and to bring a sense of finality and peace for our family.
St. Josephs Catholic Church Collingwood
Hallettstone Memorials in conjunction with Paul Hallett were asked to work on the new foundation stone & prayer stone under statue for the opening of St. Josephs Church in Collingwood. The new church was opened after being burnt down a few years prior.
